The Inspiron 5100's silver case and striking blue lid and mouse buttons herald a new look for Dell portables. Part of the company's high-performing desktop-replacement line, the Inspiron 5100 battery comes with a FireWire port, a 16MB or 32MB ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 AGP graphics card (our review system had 32MB), and a Wi-Fi antenna. To complete the notebook's wireless setup, you'll have to pay $49 for an 802.11b/g Mini-PCI adapter.
A bit on the hefty side, the Inspiron 5100 weighs 8.1 pounds (not including its power adapter) and measures 1.9 inches thick. The Inspiron 5100 battery life, at 1 hour, 48 minutes in our tests, is far from impressive.

There's a lot of real estate for showing off the striking finish, done in what Dell calls Moonlight Silver accented by Venice Blue. The system measures 1.8 by 13.1 by 10.8 inches (HWD), has a system weight of 8.2 pounds, and a travel weight with the transformer of 9.5 pounds—hefty even by desktop replacement standards. Some of the bulk comes from the 12-cell, 1.4-pound lithium ion battery; most batteries are 0.9 to 1.1 pounds. Nevertheless, the charge lasted 3 hours 41 minutes on our Business Winstone BatteryMark 2002 test—competing systems are hard-pressed to break 2:30. The 21.4 on Business Winstone 2002 and 29.2 on Multimedia Content Creation Winstone 2003 are in line with what we'd expect from a 2.4-GHz P4 processor and about four-fifths of the scores newer Pentium M (Centrino) CPUs deliver.

When designing its new Inspiron 5150, Dell started with the same sensible case that houses both the Inspiron 5100 and the Inspiron 1100 battery, then filled it full of awesome components such as a 3.06GHz mobile Pentium 4 processor, 333MHz memory, and an ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 graphics chip. These parts helped the Inspiron 5150 achieve outstanding scores in CNET Labs' benchmark tests. Additional highlights, such as a DVD+R/+RW drive, 802.11g wireless, and a giant battery, help this machine excel at just about any task, from marathon movie viewing to all-night work sessions. As long as the 8.1-pound Inspiron 5150 stays close to home, it will please even the most finicky laptop users.

It would be impossible to pick the Inspiron 5150 out of a lineup alongside the Inspiron 5100 and the Dell Inspiron 1100 battery because all three systems share the same 13.1-by-10.8-by-1.7-inch, 8.1-pound case. The AC adapter pushes the total weight past the 9.4-pound mark.

For the price, the Inspiron 5100 is a good deal, and you're better served by picking the more fully equipped model than the $1,099 entry-level model. Conversely, those who do little more than Web browsing, e-mailing, and word processing can save $200 with the $899 Celeron-based Inspiron 1100.

The DCR-TRV280 is this year’s low-end addition to the Sony Digital8 series. What it lacks in manual control options it makes up for in price, and what it lacks in chic packaging it compensates for in ease of use. It’s the only Sony model that does not feature a touch screen LCD; instead control functions are dispersed atop the massive frame–to the user’s ultimate benefit. The camcorder has not evolved from its predecessor, the DCR-TRV260 (original battery code : sony np-qm91d , sony np-qm71d

The Sony DCR-TRV280 is a behemoth and the only Sony camcorder this year to not relocate its menu system to a touch screen LCD. Control is exacted via the panoply of buttons on the camcorder’s body. The measure of control will be limited as well. No manual white balance or shutter speed is offered, and the zoom toggle is disproportionately small.
The imager is the same as all Sony Digital8’s for the last few years: a 1/6” CCD with 290K effective pixels. Under bright light conditions, the DCR-TRV280 reproduced colors with decent accuracy and acceptable noise levels. The colors were, however, somewhat washed. Low light performance was generally poor, but no more so than the performance from its big sister, the DCR-TRV480. A solid 20x optical zoom comes with the DCR-TRV280, as well as a flashy 990x digital zoom, a sad, misleading feature meant to lure in unschooled consumers. (Digital zoom artificially enlarges the picture, distorting it in the process.)

Ease of use is perhaps one of the crucial factors that can lead someone to choose a Digital8 over a MiniDV camcorder. If so, the DCR-TRV280 will not disappoint. Given the lack of manual control options, this camcorder is designed almost exclusively for point-and-shooters. The buttons are all clearly marked for each purpose, and if even these small tasks confuse the user, there is an Easy button on the upper left side that relegates nearly all quality control to the camcorder.

The DCR-TRV280 does not take stills. A step up from the DCR-TRV280 (sony np-qm71d , sony np-qm91d )will buy you this feature. Surprisingly, a Widescreen shooting mode is available, though it is not a true 16:9 aspect ratio. Ports on this camcorder include DV, A/V, and USB. Other features include Burn DVD, which allows you to burn the footage onto a computer with a DVD burner or to a DVD recorder. There’s also NightShot, Super NightShot, and Color Slow Shutter, which slows down the shutter speed in low light in order to capture more color information.

Sony supplies a NP-FP30 lithium ion battery with the DCR-TRV280. If the user continuously records with the LCD open the camcorder will function for 1 hour, 18 minutes, and 20 seconds. This is slightly less than the time stated in the user manual, which stated an estimated time of 1 hour and 20 minutes. (We use fresh batteries for this test, but bear in mind that as the battery ages its maximum continuous recording time will decrease.)

I bought the Toshiba Satellite A75 notebook computer for school and other applications as well as gaming. Most people would agree that I should have gone for a Pentium M if I am going to be transporting it to class and could take advantage of the better battery life. I probably would have if I didn't get such a good deal on this one. I snagged it for about $600 less than retail from where I work. The A75 is a desktop replacement style notebook, which is what I wanted, so I jumped on this deal.

The Toshiba Satellite A75 desktop-like build is by no means slim, and it's certainly not pretty, but it packs in some decent multimedia features. The 3.33-GHz Mobile Pentium 4 548 processor, 100GB hard drive, and DVD±RW drive are especially useful for home video editors.

For a mainstream laptop, the Toshiba's array of ports and slots falls right on the money. The laptop's left edge accommodates an infrared port and one Type II PC Card slot. The back edge is home to ports that include one for S-Video out, one VGA, one parallel, a 56Kbps modem, a 10/100 Ethernet, and two USB 2.0 ports; there's a third USB 2.0 port on the right edge, along with a headphone jack, a microphone port, and a couple of handy extras: a wireless on/off switch to conserve battery power and a volume-control wheel. Toshiba's Web site offers the Satellite A75 line in five preconfigured versions; in-store versions may vary. While many mainstream laptop manufacturers take this tack to save cash, the fact that you can't customize your A75 system irks us.

The Satellite A75's five configurations have five different model numbers (our evaluation system was the A75-S206), but they all use many of the same basic components. Each Satellite A75 runs a mobile Pentium 4 processor with Intel's much-hyped Hyper-Threading technology, an average 512MB of memory, and an aging ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 graphics chip that borrows up to 64MB of video RAM from the main memory. Also onboard is a fast Atheros 802.11b/g wireless mini PCI card and a preloaded version of Microsoft's pared-down office suite, Microsoft Works.

Design and Build

The design is fairly sleek as a nice consumer line notebook should be. A nice blue power light sits above some media buttons, it's nothing special but it looks cool. The top (back side of screen) is a slick metallic-looking cobalt color which is nice opposed to some of the standard black, charcoal and magnesium alloy cases. Overall this unit is fairly sturdy. I do not feel like I am going to break it while I'm moving it around and I even twisted the screen lid a bit to test it out, it holds up pretty well. Again, it is a consumer line, not business so it's not quite the rigid metal frames of the expensive ones, but does quite well.

Screen

The screen is absolutely wonderful. It was a factor in my purchasing this machine. A Toshiba Pentium M system with a widescreen TruBrite screen is several thousand dollars more, so this unit was quite appealing. It is always bright enough for me to see, even when I set the brightness down to save battery life. When outdoors, there is a glare on it because of the glossy finish, but it doesn't annoy me because the screen is bright enough to shine through and I never really notice the glare. Indoors, I haven't noticed a glare at all and it is the brightest, most brilliantly colored screen I have yet to see. Absolutely beautiful. I was fortunate in that it has absolutely no dead or partially lit pixels. It is a 15.4" widescreen factory set at 1280x800.

Wireless

Toshiba packages the Atheros Super G 802.11g wireless adapter built in. I love this feature, it is wonderful. It works extremely well, no difficulty and it has a convenient switch on the right side to toggle on/off. Wireless internet is a marvel in its own right. Not that it is a huge deal, but I would rather have one built in as opposed to one in the PC Card slot sticking out. There is no Bluetooth on this model. I have nothing to utilize the technology anyway, so that has no effect on me.


Conclusion

I love the fact that I can get a powerful computer in such a compact package. The screen and the DVD-RW drive are the highlights of the system, as well as having an ATI graphics chip. Overall I love this computer and would recommend it to people who want an excellent desktop replacement. If someone was really looking for battery life, I might have to recommend a similar system, only with a Pentium M instead of Pentium 4. For the price I paid (far less than retail), this computer is amazing. At retail price of over $1400 dollars, it's still a great machine for the money, but it's not quite the steal I got, so it may not seem as worth the money. In conclusion: great machine for all performance needs with adequate battery life, unless doing processor intensive applications. Recommended!

Battery

Battery life is surprisingly decent for a big and powerful desktop replacement. I set the screen to middle level brightness and also set the hard drives and screen to never turn off and left the wireless adapter on. With these settings the system ran for 3 hours even. One of the first laptops with Intel's new Core Duo processor to hit the street, the Dell Inspiron 9400 inaugurates the company's new entertainment line of laptops with a bang. In addition to its top-shelf processor and graphics card; its bright, 17-inch widescreen display; It was only a matter of time before Dell switched over to Intel’s Core Duo platform, offering the dual-core chip in its flagship Inspiron 9400 notebook. Powered by an Intel 2GHz Core Duo T2500 processor, a Gigabyte of DDR2 memory and 100GB hard drive, there is little to worry about in terms of performance or future proofing as this machine can handle anything currently on the market and other leading edge technologies, the Inspiron 9400 adds a few welcome multimedia features not found on the model that it will eventually replace, the Inspiron 9300. These include a five-in-one media card reader and Dell's MediaDirect software, though there is no integrated TV tuner. We think the slightly less expensive HP Pavilion dv8200 is a better deal for basic users who want more features than performance, but the Inspiron 9400 owns the other end of the spectrum as an incredibly powerful laptop that can speed through virtually any multimedia task from video editing to gaming.

The new Inspiron 9400 laptops from Dell (aka the E1705) don't make many changes from their hefty but powerful 9300 line, but they have a change of heart with options for 1.86GHz or 2.0GHz Core Duo processors in the 17-inch lapsters. They do come with Windows Media Center 2005, which can take advantage of an optional external USB TV tuner, and the nVidia GeForce Go 7800 256MB graphics card should do the trick for most apps. The 'books are available now on Dell.com, starting at $2000, so if you haven't been holding out for Yonah for the portability, you can get at these relatively soon.

Design

The Inspiron 9400's design is nearly identical to the Inspiron 9300's. Crafted out of sturdy and stylish magnesium alloy and measuring 394 x 288 x 41.5mm. Our test unit weighed 3.6kg (4.2kg with its AC adapter) -- 100g lighter than the HP Pavilion dv8200. Still, the Inspiron 9400 is too heavy for regular travel.
The Inspiron 9400 includes a full-size keyboard, though it lacks a separate number pad, as found on the HP Pavilion dv8200. The Inspiron 9400's mouse buttons are very big, however, and the touch pad is adequately sized. The latter features arrows running along its right and bottom edges, outlining where to place your finger when using the software-enhanced pad to scroll through documents or Web pages.
Features

A minor but appreciated upgrade from the Inspiron 9300 model is the Inspiron 9400's inclusion of Dell's MediaDirect software, which plays CDs and DVDs and lets you access photos and other media files stored on your hard drive without booting up Windows first. The two speakers and the internal subwoofer -- a rare feature among laptops -- deliver crisp and rich sound. Better yet, because the speakers sit in the corners of the laptop's front edge, your hands won't muffle them while you're typing and you can play music with the lid closed. Sandwiched between the speakers, a row of seven buttons lets you control disc playback and adjust or mute the volume. However, the Inspiron 9400 lacks an integrated TV tuner found on more expensive systems, such as the Toshiba Qosmio G20 and the Fujitsu LifeBook N6210.
Considering there are notebooks on the market for half the price of this system you would have thought that the 9400 would come fully loaded with the latest kit. Sadly, you’ll the graphics at this price point are integrated, which means no 3D games, making this more ideal as a work machine than a multimedia option. Strangely, the Inspiron 9400 ships with Microsoft’s Windows Media Centre Edition operating system (OS) as standard.
The good news is you can always choose to upgrade to dedicated graphics at the time of purchase but this will cost you between £80 and £150 depending on your options, which suddenly makes the 9400 a less appealing option.
There's no dearth of ports, jacks, or slots here: The Inspiron 9400 offers FireWire, S-Video out, VGA, a whopping six USB 2.0 ports, 56Kbps modem, 10/100 Ethernet, headphone and microphone jacks. Also available are Type II PC Card and Secure Digital slots and a swank DVI port should you want to connect the laptop to an even bigger digital LCD. There's also a five-in-one media card reader, a key feature that the Inspiron 9200 lacked. Last, but definitely not least, the Inspiron 9400 includes a multiformat double-layer DVD drive.

Performance

Weighing in at 3.5kg, this isn’t a machine for the faint of heart, or wrist, and will no doubt be bought by those looking to replace their desktop PC. With a 17-inch WUXGA screen, images are sharp and crisp but you won’t find a Super-TFT coating – this will cost you a further £90 (inc. VAT) for the privilege.
One of the first Core Duo systems we've tested, the Dell Inspiron 9400 did not disappoint. Using a collection of multithreaded and single-threaded multimedia applications, we tested the Inspiron 9400 to determine how well it handled multimedia workloads, such as ripping MP3 and encoding video. Generally speaking, the Inspiron 9400 delivered roughly a 25 per cent performance boost compared with a Pentium 4-fueled test system, the Acer Aspire 1700, and its performance was approximately 50 percent faster than that of a ThinkPad Z60t equipped with Intel's previous generation 2.0GHz Pentium M processor.
The Inspiron 9400 also delivered very competent gaming performance, turning in 57 frames per second in our Doom 3 test. That said, the Acer TravelMate 8204, outfitted with the same processor but twice the RAM, bested the Inspiron 9400 in a few of our multimedia tests and posted the highest SysMark score we've ever recorded, though its gaming performance was lacking. Though we did not test an Inspiron 9400 configured with the less expensive Core Solo processor, Dell said that its performance would be comparable with that of an Inspiron 9300 loaded with a Pentium M, a configuration that we tested last year.
